Whether you’re seeking a casual stroll with pleasant scenery or a smooth path to bike or roller-skate, check out these seven local trails and plan your next outing.
Green Mill Run Greenway
Spanning the Greenway community, this long trail will lead you by local points of interest like the beautiful Greensprings Park, Elm Street Park, and East Carolina University. Heading southwest, you’ll enter the city’s commercial district, and if you go east, you can connect to the South Tar River Greenway.
South Tar River Greenway
This serene, tree-shaded path runs by the river’s southern bank, offering great views of the flowing water. You’ll encounter some inclines as you head east, but cyclists are welcome to share the three-mile trail. You can also bring a rod and reel, as water access makes this trial an appealing option for anglers.
Jacksonville-Camp LeJeune Rail-to-Trails
The Jacksonville-Camp LeJeune Rail-to-Trails route stretches more than five miles along old abandoned rail beds. It runs from the Marine Corps base at Camp LeJeune out to Marine Boulevard in Jacksonville, where you can visit attractions like the Beirut Memorial and Riverwalk Crossing Park. This smooth, paved path is easy on the feet and wheel-friendly for both bicycles and wheelchairs.
Princeville Heritage Trail
As you explore this three-mile trail, you’ll pass by verdant fields, peaceful woodland, and the sparkling river. The trail is wide, even, and wheelchair accessible, and you’re welcome to cast a line if you’re looking for a fishing spot. The trail’s western stopping point is a short walk away from the Princeville Museum, and parking is available at the museum’s welcome center and at the Princeville Heritage Park.
Tar River Trail
Go on a walk through time along this history-rich trail, as you pass artifacts from the colonial era, Industrial Revolution, and onward. The paved road makes biking and rollerblading a breeze, while a boardwalk spans a tranquil marsh area. The riverbank is prime fishing territory, and you’ll even find public launch spots for canoes.
