Located in Washington, NC, this 1,672-acre park just off of Pamlico Sound, which is in North Carolina’s Coastal Plain, features eight miles of trails that wind through a broad range of coastal features. These features include a coastal swamp, live oaks draped in Spanish moss, wetlands, and much more. Activities are in abundance at Goose Creek State Park, including camping, hiking, boating, fishing, paddling, swimming, picnicking, and more.
History of Goose Creek State Park
Goose Creek State Park was established in 1974. The park was named for the creek that runs into the Pamlico River. Before 1974, the land served several purposes, including being the home to the Secotan and Pamlico tribes, and later, the Tuscarora. The park also boasts of being the stomping grounds of Edward Teach (Blackbeard). Additionally, the park was home to timber companies, farmers, and commercial fishing companies.

Things To Do At Goose Creek State Park
- Visit Blackbeard’s Stomping Grounds – Blackbeard lived in the Goose Creek area. You can drive up NC-92 to the town of Bath and read the historical marker that details his time.
- Meander Down The Main Road – One of the best ways to visit Goose Creek State Park is to ride a bicycle down the main road. The trip is about five miles from the park entrance and back.
- Fishing – Saltwater and freshwater meet at Goose Creek State Park. This means that you have a large variety of fish to catch. Fish range from largemouth bass, bluegill, and perch. Fishing is free, but you need a state fishing license.
- Swim – Swimming is permitted in the Pamlico River between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Be mindful that there is no lifeguard on duty. Water shoes are recommended.
- Boating and Paddling – Boaters can launch at Dinah’s Landing, which is located off of Dinah’s Landing Road. about two miles from Camp Leach Road.
- Picnic – There are several picnic areas and two shelters to choose from if you would like to picnic. The main picnic area sits near the end of the main road. It has a shelter with tables.
